The Darkness Inside the Perfect Marriage
Twenty years ago, nineteen-year-old Julia Carroll vanished while walking home. She was never found. Her disappearance destroyed the Carroll family - their father Sam drank himself to death, their mother Helen retreated into grief, and the two surviving sisters stopped speaking entirely. Claire and Lydia haven't had a conversation in over two decades.
The rift goes deeper than grief. Years ago, Lydia accused Claire's husband Paul of something horrific. Claire chose to believe Paul over her sister. That choice severed them completely.
Now Claire Scott lives the perfect Atlanta life - beautiful home, successful husband, elegant surface. Lydia Delgado struggles as a single mother, dating an ex-con, barely making ends meet. They exist in separate worlds until Paul is murdered in what appears to be a random attack.
What Claire Finds
Searching through Paul's belongings after his death, Claire discovers files she was never meant to see. Videos. Hundreds of them. The content is graphic, violent, unmistakable - Paul was involved in a snuff film ring, documenting the torture and murder of women. Claire brings the evidence to police, who dismiss and patronize her. No one wants to believe what she's found.
The discovery forces Claire to question everything. Her marriage. Her judgment. The accusation Lydia made years ago that Claire refused to believe. What else has she been blind to?
Sisters Reunited by Horror
Claire reaches out to Lydia for the first time in twenty years. Together, they begin investigating Paul's secrets - and the connections to Julia's disappearance become impossible to ignore. They track down the Fuller house, a farm property Paul inherited from his parents. What they find there is worse than either imagined: hundreds of VHS tapes filled with the same violent content, including footage of their missing sister Julia.
Then Paul appears. He faked his death. He attacks Claire and kidnaps Lydia, revealing the full scope of his monstrousness. In confrontation, Paul admits everything - he tortured and killed Julia alongside his father. He also killed Sam Carroll, staging it to look like the suicide of a grieving parent. The perfect husband has been a monster from the beginning.
Vengeance and Recovery
Claire fights back. She sets the Fuller house on fire, luring Paul outside. She shoots him in the knee, rescues Lydia, and watches Paul die. The sisters find Julia's bones in a well on the property - finally, after twenty years, they can bring their sister home.
But it doesn't end there. Claire exposes the international snuff film ring Paul was part of, implicating local police and politicians who protected it. The corruption runs deep, explaining why Julia's case was never solved, why Claire's evidence was dismissed.
The Carroll family reunites - Claire, Lydia, and their mother Helen - to clean out Julia's childhood bedroom for the last time. They share memories of the sister they lost, finally able to grieve with answers instead of endless questions.
Unflinching and Necessary
Karin Slaughter doesn't look away from violence against women - she forces readers to confront it. The content is graphic and disturbing, not for shock value but because Slaughter refuses to minimize what her characters face. She examines how predators are protected, how systems fail victims, how families can harbor monsters without knowing.
This is not comfortable reading. Sexual violence survivors should approach with extreme caution. But for readers who can handle what Slaughter delivers, Pretty Girls is a masterful thriller that uses genre conventions to illuminate real horrors. The sister relationship provides emotional grounding for darkness that might otherwise be unbearable.
